…you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house…
It is indeed comforting and exciting on a personal level to think of myself as chosen and precious to God. And indeed I am, as are you. But what impresses me here is the Plural. This is the corporate message not the individual message. We who have obeyed the Word and come to believe – the whole body of us are to recognize our calling – together.
After listening to Christine Caine’s message to IF:2015 for about the 10th time last night I still have her words ringing in my ears – “Joshua…you and all these people” (Josh 1). Not one of us is going to the “promised land” alone.
For me, I know I can get focused on my own journey with Jesus and not consider that the spiritual house mentioned here is made up of a bunch of living stones. Even more, the entire list of characteristic Peter mentions are equally distributed to every one of us. There is not one who is more chosen or more precious; not some who received less mercy.
Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people;
Once we were “not a people” – we were a multitude of individuals, every man for himself.
But now, we are God’s people; a community of equals with a central task – to make Him known and to glorify Him. We are called to Love one another because that’s how being a “people” works.
